What are Run Flat Tyres?
Tyre punctures always occur at the most inconvenient times. Usually, that means you have to stop driving until you have a replacement. Run flat tyres are the exception.
Run flat tyres are designed with a reinforced sidewall that provides extra structure, preventing the tyre from immediately collapsing after a puncture. The thicker, more rigid shape allows you to continue driving, even if there’s a sudden loss of air pressure.
That being said, you can’t keep driving forever. The 50-50 rule states that you can only drive on run-flat tyres for 50 miles or fewer and under 50 mph. We advise fitting a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) to detect a sudden loss in tyre pressure.
Run Flat Tyres: How Do They Work?
When a tyre is punctured, it immediately deflates as the air which maintained its rigidity escapes. The same thing happens with a run-flat tyre.
However, the reinforced sidewall maintains some of the tyre’s shape and strength, allowing you to reach a safe destination. No more getting stranded by the roadside!
The downside is that it’s impossible to repair a punctured run-flat tyre. A replacement is always necessary, as we cannot assess the damage to the inner tube.
