What is a TPMS Check?
A tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is a new innovation that continually monitors your tyres’ pressure. If there’s a sudden loss of pressure, e.g., from a puncture or blowout, you’ll receive an alert informing you to stop or visit your nearest service centre. Usually, the notification occurs when the air pressure drops below 6-8 PSI.
TPMS is now a standard part of modern vehicles. Located in each tyre, it’s a valuable piece of safety equipment.
The TPMS check involves inspecting each sensor for accuracy and reliability. If there are any issues, the sensor will need to be replaced. Sensors cannot be fixed, unfortunately.
Passing a TPMS check is, as of 1 January 2015, part of your MOT. A faulty TPMS sensor is classified as an MOT failure.
Why Tyre Pressure Matters
Why do you need a TPMS? Well, if you experience a puncture, you may not always realise right away. That’s especially true for run-flat tyres, which are designed to keep going despite a catastrophic puncture. In these cases, the TPMS lets you know there’s a problem.
The TPMS will detect any loss in air pressure, minimising the risk of accidents. It’ll also prevent you from getting stranded in the middle of nowhere and needing a tyre replacement.
