It is now law that all tyres are rated in a way that the general public can understand. This makes it easier for you to compare tyres in 3 main areas. These are:
- Fuel Efficiency
- Wet Grip
- Exterior Noise
Fuel efficiency
When a tyre is made and tested, one area that is tested is the tyres rolling resistance. This is tested in order to calculate the fuel efficency of the tyre. The higher the resistance, the less economical the tyre will be.
If you have an A rated tyre as opposed to a G rated, it could save on average £110 per year. Over 62 miles you will save around half a litre of fuel.
Wet Grip
Tyres with the highest rated wet grip can stop up to 30% quicker on a wet road than tyres with the lowest wet grip rating.
Good wet grip does not just mean shorter stopping distances, but also means the tyres will grip better in the wet when cornering and have fewer tendencies to aquaplane on standing water.
Exterior Noise
This relates to how much noise a tyre will generate when rolling at speed. It is measured in decibels (dB). This test relates to external noise and not the noise that the driver will experience. This will vary from vehicle to vehicle.
